Pros and Cons of Synthetic & Natural Lawns

It can be hard deciding what type of turf you want in your yard. Whether you choose synthetic or natural, there are always pros and cons. Below you can find both for each lawn choice!

Synthetic Turf

Pros

• There is very little maintenance--no watering, mowing or fertilizing
• Made from recycled materials
• Life expectancy is 25+ years so it isn't very costly in the long run
• Synthetic turf has come a long way and now looks just like real grass!

Cons

• ​Not made of entirely recycled materials, so it isn't biodegradable
• Some are made from petroleum-based products so it can contaminate runoff water after awhile
• Absorbs heat more than natural grass and can get very hot in the direct sun.

Natural Turf

Pros

• Provides oxygen and purifies the air by collecting airborne impurities​ with each individual grass blade
• Grass blades naturally cool! They naturally cool themselves and the surrounding home area
• Purifies rainwater and improves groundwater quality

Cons

• ​Accounts for 1/3 of residential water use and poses an environmental danger in dry climates because of this
• Requires mowing, blowing and trimming with gas and electric powered tools that can cause air pollution 
• Not all lawn care products are free of harmful chemicals that can pollute groundwater
