How to Garden Indoors

1/22/2020

Comments

It’s cold outside and almost everything is dormant. So why not bring some greenery indoors? Now is the perfect time to bring the garden indoors. You can grow herbs indoors and begin seedlings to transplant in the spring!

To begin your seeds, fill a pot with a starting mix, moisten and plant the seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet. Then cover with plastic to keep the starting mix and seeds from drying out. Place in a warm window. After the seeds begin to germinate, remove the plastic and place in a sunny spot or under grow lights. T5 florescent bulbs are a great option for grow lights.

Some of the easiest things to grow indoors are herbs. Basil, Oregano, Sage, Lavender, Mint, Thyme, Rosemary, Dill, Cilantro, just to name a few are great options. Basil and Dill thrive in warmer environments so just make sure that they are in a room that stays above 60 degrees. Mint is the most shade tolerant, but does need some direct sunlight each day.

Greens such as Lettuce, Arugula, Spinach and Kale are easy to grow indoors. However, if you are only growing indoors then they will only be baby greens. However, it is great to start growing these greens indoors and then transplant outside in the spring to grow to maturity.

Tomatoes and peppers are easy to start indoors, but definitely require artificial grow lights to thrive. They will need the light for around 16 hours a day with daytime temperatures of 75-80 and nighttime temperatures of 65+.
