How can I prepare for cold weather?

11/21/2019

Comments

Winter is one month away and it will be here before you know it! We have already seen chilly temperatures in the upstate with lows in the twenties. While the lows have warmed up this week, the cold temperatures are sure to be back again. Let’s make sure that your lawn is prepared!
Now is the time to be preparing for the cold weather. Laying mulch is a great place to start. Mulching is one of the most effective ways to protect sensitive plants. It helps enhance the soil’s nutrients. If you have ground up leaves from your lawn, these can be used as mulch! Mulching around the base of plants will keep them protected.
You probably want to take care of your perennial flowerbeds, too. It is a good idea to add mulch to your flowerbeds to give the ground some extra nutrients. To protect flower bulbs, add a thick layer (about 6 to 8 inches) of straw to keep the bulbs warmer. For some bulbs, you may even want to dig them up and bring them inside to protect them.
Some plants can survive in the cold, but can gain protection by being covered during extremely cold snaps. Before any snow or hard freezes, it might be a good idea to cover up sensitive plants with a blanket. The cover should be removed during the day, but can be helpful during the cold night.
If you have any questions or concerns about your lawn, drop us a comment, send us a message or give us a call. We will be happy to answer any of your questions!
