Finding the Perfect Vegetables for Your Fall Garden

8/29/2018

Comments

Fall is the perfect time to plant certain vegetables to be able to harvest in the winter. With fall quickly approaching, we want you to be ready to plant your garden! This month, we featured a new vegetable every Tuesday on our Facebook page. Below, you can find them all in one place!

Broccoli

Broccoli should be planted in full sun in moist soil that is slightly acidic. The seeds should be planted 85- 100 days before the average first frost. The plants should be 12-24 inches apart.

Kale

Kale is a superfood that is packed with antioxidants and rich in minerals, vitamin A, and vitamin C. It is a great leafy green to add to your salads! Kale should be planted in late summer and can be harvested until the first ground freeze. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Seedlings should be 8 to 12 inches apart.

Peas

Pea varieties such as Sugar Snap and English can be planted in the fall for a winter harvest. The end of this month is the perfect time to plant peas. They should be planted in full sun to ensure the best flavor. The plants should be watered in the morning and have the soil moistened 6 inches deep.

Leeks

Leeks are very similar to green onions in appearance, but thicker. However, their flavor is milder than onions. Leeks should be transplanted in early fall for an early winter harvest. The transplants should be set 4 inches apart. The leeks will grow to have stems that are 6-10 inches long and around 2 inches in diameter.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, drop us a comment, send us a message, or give us a call. We will be happy to answer any of your questions!
