Finding the Perfect Plants to Attract Pollinators

7/25/2018

Comments

Now is a great time to plant shrubs or flowers to attract pollinators. Planting these plants is a great way to spruce up the look of your lawn! They are available in all shapes and sizes and feature beautiful flowers. Not only will they decorate your yard, they will help the environment by keeping pollinators alive and healthy.

There are many options of plants that can attract pollinators that you can plant in the Upstate. This month, on our Facebook page, we featured a different type  every Tuesday. Below, you will find every plant that we featured this month, all in one place!

Bee Balm

Bee Balm is a type of flower that is known for attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. It can be planted in spring or fall and grows best when planted in full sun. They are available in several different varieties in colors like red, pink, and lavender.

Buddleia

Buddleia is more commonly known as the Butterfly Bush. It blooms beautiful flowers in purple, white, pink, or yellow during summer until the first frost. Buddleia can grow up to 15 feet (although several types only reach 5 feet) and should be planted in full sun. This plant is very heat and drought resistant. Although it has been thought to be an invasive plant, it is available in seedless varieties. Not only does Buddleia attract butterflies, but hummingbirds, as well!

Mock Orange

Mock Orange features very fragrant white flowers that attract bees. It blooms in late spring to early summer and grows best when planted in full sun to partial shade. Mock Orange grows to be around 6 to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide and is great as a border plant.  This shrub does require regular watering, especially in hot temperatures.

Rose of Sharon

It is in the Hibiscus family and comes in shades of white, red, pink and purple. Rose of Sharon grows to be around 9 to 12 feet tall and can be grown as a bush or can be trimmed in a tree shape. It is known to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Rose of Sharon grows best when planted in the sun and watered often.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, drop us a comment, send us a message, or give us a call. We will be happy to answer any of your questions!
