Finding the Perfect Ornamental Tree

5/30/2018

Comments

Now is a great time to plant ornamental trees in your yard. Planting ornamental trees is a great way to spruce up the look of your lawn! They are available in all shapes and sizes. The purpose of ornamental trees is to be a decorative focal point in your landscape. Many feature beautiful flowers, textured foliage, fruit, or wonderful scents.

There are many options of ornamental trees that you can plant in the Upstate. This month, on our Facebook page, we featured a different type of ornamental tree every Tuesday. Below, you will find every ornamental tree that we featured this month, all in one place!

Japanese Red Maple Tree

This tree features palm-shaped leaves that are a dark red-purple color. The Japanese Red Maple can grow to a mature height of 15-25’, growing around 12-24 inches per year. They grow the best when planted in full sun or partial shade and can grow in almost any type of soil condition.

Japanese Magnolia Tree

This tree features beautiful tulip-like flowers that eventually lay down to create a saucer-shaped flower. Unlike a Southern Magnolia, a Japanese Magnolia sheds its leaves in the winter and produces flower buds around February. The buds bloom in early spring, creating beautiful bare branches filled with flowers. The Japanese Magnolia usually grows to be 15-25 feet in height, and 10-15 feet in width. They should be planted in an area where there is room for its growth and full to partial sun.

Crepe Myrtle Tree

This tree features beautifully colored flowers and unique bark. Crepe Myrtles can come in all shapes and sizes. They are available in dwarf versions that reach 3 feet, a medium-sized variety that are around 15 feet, or other varieties can reach 30 feet tall. Crepe Myrtles love the sun and should be planted in full sun, if possible, because this will increase flower production.

PeeGee Hydrangea Tree

This tree features dark green foliage with beautiful white flower clusters that sometimes turn a light pink color with age. The flower clusters tend to bloom in the summer and fall months. The PeeGee Hydrangea grows best when planted in an area with sun, but can also grow in partial shade. It is a fast grower and usually reaches 10 to 15 feet in width and can reach up to 30 feet in height.

Weeping Cherry Tree

Weeping Cherry Trees are available in many different varieties that range in size from dwarf versions at 8 feet tall, to large versions reaching 40 feet. This tree loves to grow in full sun, but can tolerate some shade.  It is also important that the Weeping Cherry tree is in well-drained soil. They look their best in the spring when they bloom white or pink flowers. These beautiful flowers are even known to attract butterflies and hummingbirds!

We know that it may be hard to decide what ornamental trees to plant and that you may have many questions. We are here to help you with the entire process! We can help you with picking out the perfect ornamental trees at the nursery for your property, as well as the delivery and installation.
