If you are looking for a relaxing area just to kick back, purchase some outdoor couches and loungers. If you want to create a dining area outside, purchase table and chairs. But is your space ready for fall? Here are some tips to make your outdoor living spaces feel a little cozier for this season.
Fall Foliage Update your foliage to match the season. While most have some perennials planted in the ground in their outdoor spaces, it is a great idea to have some container plants as well. Annuals can be planted in decorative pots around your outdoor living space. This allows you to change up the foliage every season! Clean While spring-cleaning is great, fall cleaning is a good idea, too. Clean or pressure wash any decks or patios to get them fresh. The weather is a perfect temperature to be outdoors cleaning up this area. Add a Fire Pit If you don’t have a fire pit, you should really look into getting one. Whether you choose a wood-burning or a gas fire pit, it’s a great decision. Fire pits allow you to get an extended use out of your outdoor space. No matter how cool it is outside, added heat will have everyone circling around the fire for a great night of entertaining or family time. Protect Outdoor Furniture Make sure that your outdoor furniture is protected from weather damage. While this is important any season, it is especially important in the fall when the leaves are falling. If wet leaves land on your patio furniture, it could leave a hard to clean stain. Furniture covers are useful to protect. Change it up Switch up the throw pillows, change out the chair cushions, anything to change up your outdoor area. Have blankets available for your family and guests to use on chilly evenings. Add string lights to change up the look of the outdoor lighting. Anything to make your space feel fresh for this fall season! If you have any questions or concerns about your outdoor living space, drop us a comment, send us a message or give us a call. Concrete has been a popular material to create patios with because its strong, study and usually inexpensive. However, there are several problems that may arise if a patio is made with concrete that could cause your patio not to last as long.
Concrete patios may crack. We’ve all seen materials made from concrete crack over time. The problem with cracks are that you never know how serious they are. Most of the time it shouldn’t cause alarm and as long as they aren’t ignored, they hopefully won’t get worse. For cracks, up to a half of an inch wide, they can be repaired easily, but if cracks are large, sections of the concrete may need to be removed and replaced. Concrete also has a tendency of settling. While many materials settle at some point, concrete can be more noticeable. If concrete slabs are settling, if it is significant, the foundation may need to be redone. The soil may need to be better packed or new footings could have to be poured. If water is underneath the concrete and forms ice in the winter, it could also cause cracking. Tree roots may also cause an upheaval of the concrete. Because of this, the patio can become uneven and unstable. While you may not feel like any of these are deal breakers for you wanting a concrete patio, it is always good to be aware of problems that could arise with a project before you begin. By: Hannah Raines Copyright ALL Outdoors 2019 First and foremost, let’s break down what permeable pavement is and how it is different. Permeable paving is a method of paving that allows for infiltration of fluids. It combines grids and fill materials such as gravel that creates a durable surface that allows fluids such as rain to soak into the ground naturally. It catches precipitation and surface runoff and stores it in the reservoir while slowly allowing it to infiltrate into the soil below. That is why permeable pavement is a great option for outdoor living spaces!
Easy Installation Permeable pavement is easy to install. It doesn’t require any sort of expensive, specialty equipment. To be installed, the area should be graded and free of any sort of vegetation. Then, a layer of rock is placed as a base. Next, pavers are laid and finally the area is filled with gravel or limestone and compacted to create a durable surface. Changeable Are you indecisive or like to change out your space every now and then? Then all the more reason to go this route for your outdoor living space. The grids for permeable pavement are easily removable so they can be changed up or moved to a different space. Erosion Control If you have any areas with loose soil, permeable pavement is a good solution to retain soil and prevent erosion. The paving grids can be placed over the loose soil and then filled with gravel. More Durable Permeable pavement is very durable. It is just as durable as any concrete surface, but works better. Because it is permeable, it is flexible and able to move when the earth moves. When unlikely conditions occur, concrete can buckle or break, but permeable pavement is a floating surface that is flexible and won’t crack. It is also less likely to be damaged, but if it is, it is easier to correct. Less Money They are also less expensive to install. Materials such as concrete can be costly and require a good amount of labor. Permeable pavement usually comes out to be less expensive per square foot and isn’t as labor intensive.
