Leave the Leaves!

10/3/2018

Comments

Even though it may not feel like it outside, fall has arrived! Leaves are falling, but what should you do to keep your yard clean? Many people rake up the leaves, put them in bags, and dispose of them. However, leaves have nutrients that are beneficial for your yard! There are better options than just throwing away those leaves.

Leaves can’t just be left in your yard after they fall. They block air and sunlight from reaching the grass roots. This can become even worse if it rains and the leaves are matted on top of the grass. If something isn’t done to falling leaves, your yard may develop turf diseases or die.

Turn those leaves into mulch! Many mowers are designed with mulching blades that cut the leaves into tiny pieces. So tiny, that you won’t even notice that the leaves are in your yard anymore. It is important that you are mulching the fallen leaves at least once a week. If leaves are left to build up for too long it could be too much for your mower. If you have several big trees on your property, you may even need to mow twice a week, depending on how rapidly the leaves are falling.

It is important to mulch in the fall to supply your yard with nutrients before winter comes. By utilizing the leaves in your yard you are saving money because you’ll make your own mulch for free! It will also save you time because instead of raking for hours and placing in bags, you can mulch in the leaves with a mower.

Why is it important to install mulch and pine needles?

  • It is important for the health of your shrubs, flowers, and trees.
  • Mulch and pine needles help insulate the soil to provide protection from heat and cold temperatures for plant, flower, and tree roots.
  • Proper depth of Mulch or pine needles will help retain water and help keep the roots moist.
  • Fresh Mulch and pine needles keeps weeds out to help prevent root competition.
  • Mulch and pine needles will help prevents soil compaction and erosion.

Types of Mulch & Pine Needles:

  • Double Ground: Double ground mulch is bark that is shredded twice.  Most people install double ground mulch in our area.  Double ground mulch comes in natural, dark brown, and black color.
  • Triple Ground: Triple ground mulch is great for fruit and vegetable gardens.  January and February are the perfect time to install triple ground mulch for your garden.  It will normally decompose within 6 months, which will give vital nutrients to your plants as they grow.
  • Pine Needles: Pine needles come in two types, short or long needle.  We can install both.  While many people say that pine needles will help acidify your soil because they are acidic, that is false.  Once pine needles turn brown they are not longer acidic.  Even green pine needles are only slightly acidic once they fall off the tree.  So we will be happy to install them if you would like us to.

It is not too late to have mulch and pine needles installed at your home or business. In fact it is the perfect time to have us install mulch or pine needles.  We would be happy to get you a price today.
