By: Hannah Raines Copyright ALL Outdoors 2021 Curb appeal, which involves designing an appealing image for the outside of your home, is one of the easiest and most effective ways to land a positive first impression of your property. Curb appeal can help your home bring in higher asking prices and selling more quickly by drawing house hunters inside the home. The right kind of curb appeal can have a major impact on both your home’s resale value and the time it takes to sell. If you’re looking to boost your home’s value by investing in curb appeal, consider these different options. Landscaping When it comes to great curb appeal, you really can’t go wrong with simple but elegant landscaping. You want something that feels completely inviting but doesn’t take a lot of work or money to properly maintain. You can get a lot of life out of even simple changes as long as you really focus on clean lines, healthy foliage, and safety.
Climate, weather, and materials all play an important role when you need to touch up exterior paint. For homes with wood exteriors, it could be as frequent as every four to seven years. While it may seem like a big undertaking, ensuring your home’s facade is clean and the paint is touched up can really draw in more potential buyers, as well as improve your resale value.
Your front door effectively acts as the welcome mat to your home. A front door that is old, damaged, or dingy does not inspire people to open it — let alone imagine opening it every day. Luckily, front doors can be pretty simple to improve.
Clara Beaufort reached out from Gardener Gigs to write this wonderful guest blog for us. Clara is a retired business owner, who is currently working in community gardening. Gardener Gigs aims to connect local gardeners with those who need them. Thanks Clara. It’s cold outside and almost everything is dormant. So why not bring some greenery indoors? Now is the perfect time to bring the garden indoors. You can grow herbs indoors and begin seedlings to transplant in the spring!
To begin your seeds, fill a pot with a starting mix, moisten and plant the seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet. Then cover with plastic to keep the starting mix and seeds from drying out. Place in a warm window. After the seeds begin to germinate, remove the plastic and place in a sunny spot or under grow lights. T5 florescent bulbs are a great option for grow lights. Some of the easiest things to grow indoors are herbs. Basil, Oregano, Sage, Lavender, Mint, Thyme, Rosemary, Dill, Cilantro, just to name a few are great options. Basil and Dill thrive in warmer environments so just make sure that they are in a room that stays above 60 degrees. Mint is the most shade tolerant, but does need some direct sunlight each day. Greens such as Lettuce, Arugula, Spinach and Kale are easy to grow indoors. However, if you are only growing indoors then they will only be baby greens. However, it is great to start growing these greens indoors and then transplant outside in the spring to grow to maturity. Tomatoes and peppers are easy to start indoors, but definitely require artificial grow lights to thrive. They will need the light for around 16 hours a day with daytime temperatures of 75-80 and nighttime temperatures of 65+. By: Hannah Raines Copyright ALL Outdoors 2019 Falling leaves are in full effect! You probably have an overabundance of leaves in your yard and are wondering what to do with them. We have posted several blogs about options other than just bagging up leaves and throwing them away. This week, we want to tell you about composting. Composting leaves is yet another option that helps your yard and can save you money in the long run.
Leaves are rich in nutrients and can make effective mulch for winter and summer. Decomposed leaves are super beneficial to the soil. The leaves of most trees contain TWICE the mineral content of manure! While it is beneficial to blow all of your leaves in the direction of your garden, if the leaves aren’t shredded, it may take years for them to decompose. Leaves will decompose and become compost quicker and more effectively if you shred the leaves first. Pile all of the leaves together and go over the leaves with the lawn mower a few times to create finely shredded leaves. After you have your leaves shredded, add a nitrogen source, such as grass clippings. For every five wheelbarrows of ground leaves, add one wheelbarrow of fresh grass clippings. Feel free to add other components such as coffee grounds, fruit peelings, and egg shells to make your compost pile even healthier. Try to go out once a week and stir up the compost pile to add oxygen to it to help the decomposition process. Add some water if the compost pile ever gets too dry. We hope this has given you another helpful idea for putting your fallen leaves to good use this season!
